Great bit Rob, y
ou sold a book. I don't agree ab out labeling, it 's an old nontoa ricg tradition. If it was good e nough for Thomas Nast it's good e nough for anyone . Mauldin, who l ike Will Rogers was a dangerousl y popular populi st, may have fel t the need to be on guard. Mauld in's cartoons ar e not nearly as complex as carto ons from the lat e 1800 s often w ere, so you coul d say the labels weren't needed, but if you remov e the labels fro m Mauldin's cart oons most people would get them a s intended. Maul din may have use d them because h e wanted to nail things down for the unenlightene d and the people who might try an d distort his me ssage. |
